THE BEYOND BAROQUE AWARDS DINNER
|
ABOUT THE EVENT:
There's a hell of a distance between wisecracking and wit. Wit has truth in it; wisecracking is simply calisthenics with words.
--DOROTHY PARKER, The Paris Review, summer 1956
This November we launch the next 50 years of Beyond Baroque at our 9th Annual Awards Dinner. Held at the historic Santa Monica Bay Woman’s Club The Beyond Salon will be a sparkling evening of words, music, food, wine, and wit. Join us in honoring our executive director emeritus Richard Modiano for his years of exemplary service to Beyond Baroque; the visionary poet Harryette Mullen for her outstanding achievements in poetry; Get Lit-Words Ignite founder and director Diane Luby Lane for her service to the young poets of Los Angeles; and UCLA professor and writer Johanna Drucker for her extraordinary generosity in organizing and cataloguing Beyond Baroque’s 50,000 item archive.
The Beyond Salon takes its inspiration from the legendary Algonquin Round Table, where a circle of supremely inventive writers, actors, critics & playwrights gathered for a daily mixture of lunch and biting wit. Guests at The Beyond Salon have the option of purchasing a regular ticket to the dinner, or of selecting a special salon seating ticket that will allow them to be seated at a table host from the poetry, literary, music, and art worlds, and which will allow them entry to a pre-dinner reception with the hosts. All guests will get to enjoy an evening of entertainment and lively conversation.
ABOUT OUR HONOREES:
Richard Modiano
Richard Modiano is the Executive Director Emeritus of the Beyond Baroque Foundation. He has served Beyond Baroque first as a member of the board of trustees, and then as executive director from 2010 to 2019. In that time he produced and curated hundreds of literary events; oversaw the creation of the Young Poets’ Development Program with then Board President Sherman Pearl; established the Mike Kelley Art Gallery by naming Robert Branaman as curator; organized the landmark 2018 Beyond Beat Festival with S.A. Griffin; oversaw the organization’s historic 50th anniversary celebrations; and helped launch the Pacific Coast Poetry Series imprint of Beyond Baroque Books to widespread acclaim. His devotion to poetry and literature relaunched Beyond Baroque for a new generation of writers and artists. Richard is a globally respected poet, a rank and file member of the Industrial Workers of the World, and the publisher of the Moon & Sun Review.
