About the the Mike Kelley Gallery

Named for world-renowned artist and longtime friend of Beyond Baroque Mike Kelley, the Mike Kelley Gallery honors his history as an early member of the Beyond Baroque community and his later support. Today, the gallery hosts bimonthly exhibitions by emerging and established artists from Los Angeles and around the world.

Mike Kelley (October 27, 1954 – c. January 31, 2012) was an American artist whose work involved found objects, textile banners, drawings, assemblage, collage, performance, photography, sound and video. He also worked on curatorial projects; collaborated with many other artists and musicians; and left a formidable body of critical and creative writing. The Mike Kelley Gallery is named in his honor, his memory, and with gratitude.

Proxy opened on January 13, 2013 as part of the art production of Annetta Kapon. It is a one cubic foot box, open in front, usually placed on the wall at face level. As of 2025, Proxy Gallery has hosted 98 exhibitions, mostly one-person shows, with a few group shows and 2-person collaborations. In a couple of cases the gallery is left empty, and what is being displayed is the gallery itself.

For many years, the gallery was at Otis College and had a given internal audience. It is currently hosted at Beyond Baroque in Venice, CA. Proxy is also a traveling gallery and has hosted shows in Los Angeles, Paris and Athens. Learn more about Proxy Gallery here or view the Beyond Baroque Proxy Gallery Exhibition Archive here.
